Effect analysis of an arc-strike-induced defect on the failure of a post-tensioned threadbar

    Get PDF
A temporary threadbar used for precast segmental construction broke during the post-tensioning stage before reaching the service load. Failure analysis showed that the premature failure of the bar was due to the presence of an arc strike. The arc strike effects on the material and threadbar integrity are considered.Peer Reviewe

This paper presents a finite element modeling analysis of deformation on iron-base mechanically alloyed oxide dispersion strengthened alloy by spherical indentations (Brinell test). Results of the model are used to interpret the role of residual shear stresses on the development of recrystallized grain structure and the temperature at which recrystallization occurs.I. Effect of nanoscale precipitation on strengthening of ferritic ODS Fe-Cr-Al alloy

    Get PDF
The kinetics of Fe rich α and Cr rich α′ phase separation during aging of Fe-Cr-Al oxide dispersion strengthened alloys have been analysed with a combination of atom probe tomography and thermoelectric power measurements. The slight lattice parameter decrease measured by X-ray diffraction after thermal aging was associated with a lattice misfit between the emerging α and α′ domains. The elastic strain associated with this misfit and the different elastic moduli for the α and α′ phases would produce an increase in internal stresses that would retard the motion of dislocations and thus would be the main cause for the strengthening. © 2013 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Published by Maney on behalf of the Institute.Peer Reviewe

Influence of bainite morphology on impact toughness of continuously cooled cementite free bainitic steels

    Get PDF
The influence of bainite morphology on the impact toughness behaviour of continuously cooled cementite-free low carbon bainitic steels has been examined. In these steels, bainitic microstructures formed mainly by lath-like upper bainite, consisting of thin and long parallel ferrite laths, were shown to exhibit higher impact toughness values than those with a granular bainite, consisting of equiaxed ferrite structure and discrete island of marteniste/austenite (M/A) constituent. Results suggest that the mechanism of brittle fracture of cementite-free bainitic steels involves nucleation of microcracks in M/A islands but is controlled by the bainite packet sizeSpanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for financial support in the form of a PhD research grant (FPI grant under the project no. Comparison of Ductile-to-Brittle Transition Behavior in Two Similar Ferritic Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Alloys

    Get PDF
The ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) behavior of two similar Fe-Cr-Al oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) stainless steels was analyzed following the Cottrell–Petch model. Both alloys were manufactured by mechanical alloying (MA) but by different forming routes. One was manufactured as hot rolled tube, and the other in the form of hot extruded bar. The two hot forming routes considered do not significantly influence the microstructure, but cause differences in the texture and the distribution of oxide particles. These have little influence on tensile properties; however, the DBT temperature and the upper shelf energy (USE) are significantly affected because of delamination orientation with regard to the notch plane. Whereas in hot rolled material the delaminations are parallel to the rolling surface, in the hot extruded material, they are randomly oriented because the material is transversally isotropic.Financial support of the Spanish Ministerio de Economia e Innovación (MINECO) through a Coordinated Project in the Materials Area of Plan Nacional 2013 (MAT2013-47460-C5-1) is gratefully acknowledged. Influence of V(C,N) precipitates on microstructure and mechanical properties of continuous cooled C-Mn-V

    Get PDF
The effect of chemical composition and processing parameters on the formation of acicular ferrite and/or bainite has been investigated. In particular, this paper deals with the influence that N through its combination with V, as V(C,N) precipitates, has on the decomposition of austenite. Likewise, the intragranular nucleation potency of V(C,N) precipitates is analyzed through the continuous cooling transformation diagrams (CCT) of two C-Mn-V steels with different contents of N. Results reported in this work allow us to conclude that acicular ferrite can only be achieved alloying with vanadium and nitrogen, meanwhile bainite is promoted in steels with a low level of nitrogen. It is concluded that higher strength values are obtained in acicular ferrite than in bainitic steel but a similar brittle-ductile transition temperature (BDT), and lower values of impact absorbed energy (KV) has been recorded in nitrogen-rich steel.VANITEC and the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion for their financial supportPeer reviewe

ARL15 modulates magnesium homeostasis through N-glycosylation of CNNMs

    Get PDF
Cyclin M (CNNM1-4) proteins maintain cellular and body magnesium (Mg2+) homeostasis. Using various biochemical approaches, we have identified members of the CNNM family as direct interacting partners of ADP-ribosylation factor-like GTPase 15 (ARL15), a small GTP-binding protein. ARL15 interacts with CNNMs at their carboxyl-terminal conserved cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) domains. In silico modeling of the interaction between CNNM2 and ARL15 supports that the small GTPase specifically binds the CBS1 and CNBH domains. Immunocytochemical experiments demonstrate that CNNM2 and ARL15 co-localize in the kidney, with both proteins showing subcellular localization in the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and the plasma membrane. Most importantly, we found that ARL15 is required for forming complex N-glycosylation of CNNMs. Overexpression of ARL15 promotes complex N-glycosylation of CNNM3. Mg2+ uptake experiments with a stable isotope demonstrate that there is a significant increase of 25Mg2+ uptake upon knockdown of ARL15 in multiple kidney cancer cell lines. Altogether, our results establish ARL15 as a novel negative regulator of Mg2+ transport by promoting the complex N-glycosylation of CNNMs.European Joint Program for Rare Diseases (EJPRD2019-40)Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and Universities (PGC2018-096049-B-I00)Junta de Andalucía (BIO-198, US-1254317 and US-1257019

Research on factors related to the design of educational spaces has grown in recent years, yet still maintaining traditionalist principles in classroom management. Investing in an element that is common to all students, such as design factors of educational space can mean large-scale cultural development. As a result, given the economical cost, the retention time of educational buildings, and the situation of need for rehabilitation or conservation of many of those, it is necessary to test the possible impact of the space design as a matter of improving education. After a first approximation, it is concluded that the factors of space design that affect the process of teaching and learning are lighting, acoustics, and thermal level, among others.

In the present investigation the familiar influence had be as principal aim approach in the anxiety towards the mathematics and its relation with Academic Performance in pupils of Secondary Obligatory Education. One of the arguments that one presents is the fact that the anxiety forms a part of the subjective knowledge of the persons, depends on the environment where it develops and is determinant when it is a question of describing, to understanding or making clear the success or the failure of the students. One of the variables that acquires more importance is the familiar context of the individual. To know those different forms, to understand the meaning of emotional dimension when they work on mathematics, and the feelings of frustration, happiness or anxiety, can help to improve teaching, which will have a notable influence on their performance. The used instrument was the questionnaire of anxiety designed by Mato (2006) that provides information about the anxiety before the evaluation, the comprehension of problems, to realize operations and to have to face real-life situations related to the mathematics. The obtained results emphasize that the professions of the parents and of the mothers mark significant differences in how much to the anxiety of his children and a negative correlation exists between the anxiety and the qualifications obtained by the pupils in the subject during the previous course.
